The Diocese of Portland celebrates a wide range of cultural expressions within the faith. In Portland, Catholic life is especially vibrant, with Masses celebrated in eight different languages. A thriving Vietnamese Catholic community also gathers there, contributing its devotional traditions, music, and community celebrations to parish life. Meanwhile, African communities are active in both Portland and Lewiston, enriching liturgies with expressive worship, choir traditions, and community gatherings that strengthen parish belonging.
Within the Parish of the Resurrection of the Lord, Orono, is St. Ann Church, serving the Penobscot Nation. This ministry serves as an important reminder of the deep spiritual heritage of the land and the enduring contributions of Native peoples to the Catholic faith in Maine.
Across all these ministries, the Diocese of Portland remains committed to walking with people of every culture and background. Through language-specific liturgies, community outreach, cultural celebrations, and pastoral accompaniment, the diocese continues to grow as a place where the Gospel is lived through unity in diversity. As Maine’s cultural landscape evolves, the diocese’s multicultural ministries stand as a joyful witness to the beauty of a Church formed by many peoples and animated by one faith.
